Memphis
Memphis Design, pop culture, and the battle against ‘good taste’
This is a creation in historical design styles. I chose the design movement ‘Memphis’ as my inspiration for the covers of the two hypothetical books namely ‘Memphis: Awesome or Awful’ and ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’. ‘Memphis: Awesome or Awful’ is about the design movement itself. And hence, the cover flaunts scattered, bright shapes like circles and triangles with graphic patterns such as polka dots and lines. The zany storytelling and colourful characters of the second book, ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’, relate to the core concept of Memphis as a design movement. Use of bright neon, primary colours, geometric shapes, and bold, patterns are used for visual interest and as a vehicle for storytelling.
